NEW REGULATION ON GREEN BUILDINGS

The Minister of Public Works and Housing has issued Regulation No. 02/PRT/M/2015 of 2015 on Green Buildings. The Regulation aims to promote green and sustainability in the construction of buildings and imposes green building requirements. There are 3 compliance levels of green building requirements for new and existing buildings, i.e. mandatory, recommended and voluntary. Buildings to which mandatory requirements apply are:

  1. Class 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 buildings with high or special complexity and above a certain height;
  2. Class 6, 7, 8, 9a, 9b buildings with 2 stories and an area of 5,000 m2;
  3. Buildings with a high-consumption of energy, water, and other natural resources; and/or
  4. Buildings specified by the regional government according to local needs and its energy policy.

Regents/mayors (or the Governor for DKI Jakarta) will issue green building certificates valid for 5 years. The Regulation has been in force since 24 February 2015.
